Ukrainian media, citing their intelligence sources, report that Kyiv has seemingly deployed special forces to Syria to attack Russian mercenary facilities there.
According to the Kyiv Post, which referenced the Ukrainian Military Intelligence Directorate (HUR), Kyiv’s special forces and Syrian opposition rebels reportedly launched an assault on Russian mercenary facilities in the Middle Eastern country.

The Kyiv Post published a video described as being recorded in March 2024, depicting the clashes. The authenticity of the information and images provided by the Ukrainian outlet has not been independently verified.
It is reported that HUR’s special forces unit Khimik collaborated with rebels to attack Russian mercenaries supporting the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
The source indicated that fighting is occurring in southern Syria, particularly in the Golan Heights, where Russian forces are concentrated.
Since the beginning of the year, the insurgent forces, supported by Ukrainian operatives, have reportedly conducted numerous attacks on Russian military facilities in the area, according to the Kyiv Post.
These attacks have targeted checkpoints, strongholds, patrols, and Russian military convoys, using rocket-propelled grenades, “Tarab” mortars, and explosive-laden vehicles.
Russia and Syria have not commented on these reports.
Russia deployed its military forces to Syria in 2015, aiding President Bashar al-Assad’s regime in repelling the terrorist group IS and opposition groups backed by the US and Turkey.
After completing the mission to eliminate IS, Russia has maintained a long-term military presence in Syria.
Additionally, Russian mercenaries, such as those from the private military company Wagner, are believed to be involved in combat missions and securing oil extraction facilities in Syria.
According to the Kyiv Post, Moscow seemingly redeployed some troops and equipment from Syria to the Ukrainian battlefield in the fall of 2022, aiming to bolster its forces in the conflict with Kyiv.
Moreover, Ukrainian media sources suggest that besides Syria, HUR special forces have also allegedly attacked Wagner forces in Sudan previously.
